Anyone who’s used an iPhone for even a few days has discovered that while these phones are more powerful, and more fun, than perhaps any other cell or smart phone, one place they don’t excel is battery life. Any halfway intensive iPhone user will recharge their phone almost every couple of days.

There are ways to conserve iPhone battery life, but many of them involve turning off services and features, which makes it a choice between all the cool things that the iPhone can do and having enough juice to do them.

Here are 14 tips to help you extend your iPhone battery life.

1. Turn on Auto-Brightness

extend iphone battery: auto brightness

The iPhone has an ambient light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the screen based on the light around it (darker in dark places, brighter when there's more ambient light) to both save battery and make it easier to see. Turn Auto-Brightness on and you’ll save battery because your screen will need to use less power in dark places.

Find it in the Settings app -> Brightness & Wallpaper -> Auto-Brightness On

2. Reduce Screen Brightness

iphone battery life: screen brightness

You can control the default brightness of your iPhone screen with this slider. Needless to say, the brighter the default setting for the screen, the more battery it requires. Keep the screen dimmer to conserve more of your battery.

Find it in Settings -> Brightness & Wallpaper

3. Turn Bluetooth Off

iphone battery extend: bluetooth

Bluetooth wireless networking is especially useful for cell phone users with wireless headsets or earpieces. But transmitting data wirelessly takes battery and leaving Bluetooth on to accept incoming data at all times requires even more juice. Turn off Bluetooth except when you’re using it to squeeze more juice from your battery.

Find it in Settings -> Bluetooth -> Move Slider to Off

4. Turn Off 3G/4G

iphone battery life:turn off 3g

The iPhone 3G and later models can take advantage the speedy 3G and 4G LTE cellular phone networks. Not surprisingly, using 3G, and especially 4G LTE, requires more battery life to get the quicker data speeds and higher-quality calls. It’s tough to go slower, but if you need more battery, turn off 3G or LTE and just use the older, slower networks. Your battery will last longer (though you’ll need it when you’re downloading websites more slowly!).

Find it in Settings -> General -> Cellular -> Slide Enable 3G to Off on some models or Enable LTE to Off on the iPhone 5 or newer

5. Keep Wi-Fi Off

iphone battery extend: turn off wi-fi

The other kind of high-speed network that the iPhone can connect to is Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is even faster than 3G, though it’s only available where there’s a hotspot (not virtually everywhere like 3G). Keeping Wi-Fi turned on at all times in hopes that an open hotspot will appear is a sure way to drain your battery life. So, unless you’re using it right this second, keep Wi-Fi turned off.

Find it in Settings -> WiFi -> Slide to Off

6. Turn Off Location Services

iphone battery performance: turn off location services

One of the coolest features of the iPhone is its built-in GPS. This allows your phone to know where you are and give you exact driving directions, give that information to apps that help you find restaurants, and more. But, like any service that sends data over a network, it needs battery power to work. If you’re not using Location Services, and don’t plan to right away, turn them off and save some power.

Find it in Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> Slide to Off

7. Turn Data Push Off

iphone battery: turn off data push

The iPhone can be set to automatically suck email and other data down to it or, for some kinds of accounts, have data pushed out to it whenever new data becomes available. You’re probably realized by now that accessing wireless networks costs you battery life, so turning data push off, and thus reducing the number of times your phone connects to the network, will extend your battery’s life. With push off, you’ll need to set your email to check periodically or do it manually (see the next tip for more on this).

Find it in Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar -> Fetch New Data -> Slide to Off

8. Fetch Email Less Often

iphone battery performance: fetch data less

The less often your phone accesses a network, the less battery it uses. Save battery life by setting your phone to check your email accounts less often. Try checking every hour or, if you’re really serious about saving battery, manually. Manual checks means you’ll never have email waiting for you on your phone, but you’ll also stave off the red battery icon.

Find it in Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar -> Fetch New Data -> Select Your Preference

9. Auto-Lock Sooner

iphone battery life: auto-lock sooner

You can set your iPhone to automatically go to sleep – a feature known as Auto-Lock - after a certain amount of time. The sooner it sleeps, the less power is used to run the screen or other services. Try setting Auto-Lock to 1 or 2 minutes.

Find it in Settings -> General -> Auto-Lock -> Tap your Preference

10. Turn off Equalizer

iphone battery: turn off equalizer

The iPod app on the iPhone has an Equalizer feature that can adjust music to increase bass, decrease treble, etc. Because these adjustments are made on the fly, they require extra battery. Turn the equalizer off to conserve battery. This means you'll have a slightly modified listening experience - the battery savings might not be worht it to true audiophiles - but for those hoarding battery power, it's a good deal.

Find it in Settings -> Music -> EQ -> Tap off

11. Do Less-Battery-Intensive Things

Not all ways to save battery life involve settings. Some of them involve the way you use the phone. Things that require the phone be on for long periods of time, or use a lot of system resources, suck the most battery. These things include movies, games, and browsing the web. If you need to conserve battery, limit your use of battery-intensive apps.

12. Sleep and Wake Less

Constantly putting your phone to sleep and waking it up will drain battery life. Of course these functions are common parts of using the phone, but you can also be judicious in your turning on and off of the phone and save battery life at the same time.

13. Buy an Extended Life Battery

mophie Juice Pack iphone extended batteryimage copyright mophie

If all else fails, just get more battery. A few accessory makers like mophie and Kensington offer extended life batteries for the iPhone. If you need so much battery life that none of these tips help you enough, an extended life battery is your best bet. With one, you’ll get days more standby time and many hours more use.

14. iPhone 4S & iOS 5: Turn Off Other Location Settings

system services settings

Use this tip if your iPhone 4S or devices upgraded to iOS 5 are burning through battery life too quickly. It's probably a software bug, so Apple may fix it and this tip may go away, but in the meantime, here it is.

A number of additional location services introduced in iOS 5 seem to be draining battery too quickly. Turn them off and you should regain some battery life.

Find it in Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services -> Turn off Diagnostics & Usage, Location-Based iAds, and Setting Time Zone

Mobile Phone News 2013: Samsung, Apple to use wireless charging on their phones? www.drmobiles.co.nz

Wireless_charging

Wireless charging tech has been around for a few years now, but 2013 might be the year it finally goes mainstream. Industry sources say that Samsung and Apple are both working on wireless charging for their 2013 flagships smartphones.

Samsung is reportedly looking at Qi from the Wireless Power Consortium – it’s currently the most popular choice with members including Nokia, LG, HTC, Sony and Motorola. It’s worth noting that Samsung is currently a member of a competing standard run by the Alliance for Wireless Power (along with Qualcomm, TI, Broadcom and others).

Whichever standard it goes for, Samsung may not integrate the tech right into the Galaxy S IV, but put it in an optional back cover instead (like the Nokia Lumia 820). There are currently third-party Qi charging kits for the Galaxy S III as well, but not an official Samsung-made accessory.

Apple is also looking into enabling wireless charging on its products, but the company will reportedly go for a homegrown solution, which won’t be out of character for the Cupertino giant. According to insiders Apple is also investigating an implementation og the tech as an add-on rather than build it into the iPhone 5S.

In less than a week we’ll know if Samsung has put wireless charging tech in the Galaxy S IV and what kind. Apple’s announcement won’t be for some time, though.

Tech News 2013: Motorola lays off 1,200 employees in the U.S., China and India

Moto_laid_off

Motorola Mobility has sent an email to its workforce saying more than 10% of the personnel is going to be laid off, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The email, which affects about 1,200 employees in the U.S, China and India states that while we're very optimistic about the new products in our pipeline, we still face challenges.

Here's what a Motorola representative said to WSJ:

These cuts are a continuation of the reductions we announced last summer. It's obviously very hard for the employees concerned, and we are committed to helping them through this difficult transition.

Google is continuing to streamline Motorola Mobility after in August last year more than 4,000 people were let go, leaving the smartphone maker with 11,113 employees.

Tech News Update: Samsung To Launch Galaxy S4 On March 14, 2013, www.drmobiles.co.nz (Google Android Repair, Auckland)

Samsung-galaxy-s4
After months of speculation, Samsung have finally confirmed that they will be revealing the Galaxy S IV on March 14th at a dedicated event in New York. The March 14th date was widely predicted throughout the industry before the official invitations were sent, as press were expecting Samsung to wait until the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, but the confirmation is exciting nonetheless for those who have long-anticipated the newest Galaxy device.

Despite there being little information about the handset at this stage, online stores are already allowing customers to register an interest in the Galaxy S4. Enough rumours have circulated that a fairly solid prediction can be drawn about its features, so here’s what industry experts are expecting from the press event next month:

Specifications

The Galaxy S IV is expected to boast Samsung’s new eight-core processor, alongside a separate eight-core graphics processing unit, with 2GB RAM. A five-inch display with an impressive 1920×1080 resolution and a 13-megapixel camera should keep photographers happy, while the predicted 2-megapixel front-facing camera would enable users to take quick social snaps and make high-quality video calls. It should be running on the latest version of Android, the Jelly Bean.

Hardware

Alongside the inner workings of the phone, there are a number of additions contributing to the handset’s design and functionality which should make it a strong contender in this year’s smartphone market should they turn out to be more than rumour. In December, the concept of a super-strong, flexible display started making the rounds in connection with the Galaxy S IV. It’s well-known that Samsung has been working on this technology, but whether it will be featured on the upcoming device remains to be seen. Other predictions include the capacity for wireless charging, and a build that creates the impression that the screen reaches the edges of the handset.

Competition

The Samsung Galaxy S IV is expected to see stiff competition this year from the iPhone 6, which has only just started its turn on the rumour wheel. It’s not expected until summer/autumn, which gives Samsung a great opportunity to gain some ground if the April release prediction is correct.

Even after the iPhone 6′s release, it’s likely that the S IV won’t see too much change in profit, as fans of the manufacturer and the Android software are slowly becoming as loyal as Apple’s own fanbase! The Galaxy S3 sparked a new trend in smartphone buying, as one of the first handsets to overtake the iPhone in sales – the BBC reported that by the third quarter of last year Samsung had reported record profits. The hype around the S4 suggests we could be expecting another great victory for Samsung in 2013!

Archeologists Unearth Alien-Like Skulls In A Mexico Cemetery

[Watch Video: Alien-Like Skulls Unearthed In Mexican Cemetery]

Foto6alien

Archeologists have unearthed what looks like a cone-shaped alien skull from 1,000 years ago in Mexico.

The skull, which dates from 945 A.D. to 1308 A.D., was discovered accidentally while digging an irrigation system in the northwest state of Sonora in Mexico.

Cristina Garcia Moreno, who worked on the project with Arizona State University, explained that 13 of the 25 skulls found in the Hispanic cemetery had these deformed heads.

“We don’t know why this population specifically deformed their heads,” Moreno told ABC News.

The site, known as El Cementerio, was discovered in 1999, but the team just completed their analysis of the skeletal remains last month. They plan to continue their research during the next field season. Archaeologists also discovered artifacts on the site, like pendants, nose rings and jewelry.

They said the deformation of human skulls was part of an ancient ritual that took place 1,000 years ago. The deformation was achieved by binding a person’s head between two blocks of wood to apply pressure on the skull by wrapping the wood with bands.

“Cranial deformation has been used by different societies in the world as a ritual practice, or for distinction of status within a group or to distinguish between social groups,” Moreno told ABC News. “The reason why these individuals at El Cementerio deformed their skulls is still unknown.”

The team said that many of the bones unearthed were the remains of children, leading them to believe the practice of deforming skulls “may have been inlet and dangerous.”

The Chinook of the U.S. Northwest and the Choctaw of the U.S. Southeast both were known for practicing skull deformation as well.

Moreno told ABC that people deformed their heads in Mexico because they wanted to distinguish important people, or they wanted to distinguish people from one group from another.

LG Optimus F5 and F7 4G phones announced ahead of MWC

LG has raised the curtain on two mid-range 4G smartphones – the Optimus F5 and the Optimus F7 – as it bids to bring the superfast network technology to the masses.

Unveiled rather unceremoniously in a press release mere days before this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicks off in Barcelona, the handsets are billed as increasing "LG’s 4G LTE footprint”, as it looks to fill an apparent gap in the market for keenly priced 4G phones.

Featuring some very modest specs, the smartphones are clearly intended for the scores of new and entry-level buyers who’ll be looking to get on board with the 4G revolution that’s finally kicking into gear in the UK.

Lg_f_series_smartphones

Highlights of the Optimus F5 include a 4.3-inch IPS display, a 1.2GHz dual core processor and a none-too-shabby five-megapixel shooter, while the Optimus F7 rocks a 4.7-inch True HD IPS display, a 1.5GHz dual core chip and an eight-megapixel primary snapper.

Both kits offer 8GB of onboard storage (expandable by a further 32GB via microSD), the latest Jelly Bean (4.1.2) version of Android preinstalled and a host of UI features, upgraded versions of exclusive LG apps and Live Zooming, which lets users zoom into a specific area while watching a video.

“LG continues to lead the industry with 4G LTE innovation and the Optimus F Series, a well-balanced an well-equipped 4G LTE smartphone for the mass market, embodies the best of our broad LTE patent portfolio and innovative UX features,” said CEO Dr. Jong-seok Park.

Apple iPhone 6: Apple factory photos leak online (news, repair, unlock , Auckland)

Images purported to show the next-generation iPhone have leaked online, as more and more details emerge of what’s shaping up to be an unusually crowded Apple product pipeline in 2013.

Sourced by Chinese site Zol.com.cn, the photos, which it's claimed originate from a plant operated by Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn, appear to show the handset at varying stages of the production process.

Assuming what we're looking at is the real thing (and it should be noted that some claim that they're merely fake iPhones), the iPhone 6 is barely distinguishable from the iPhone 5, both in terms of dimensions and design.

Very much present and correct, for instance, is a physical home button, which Apple is supposed to have been considering ditching for years now. If you set much store in rumours, that is.

The presence of curved edges and the centrally located front-facing camera that was repositioned with the iPhone 5 also indicate that the seventh-generation handset may not be the radical departure in the design stakes that some had hoped for.

This chimes with separate reports indicating that the key differences between the current model and the iPhone 6 will be largely restricted to the phone’s internal specifications.

News of Apple’s plans comes amid claims that it is also planning to release a phablet-sized phone this year, variously dubbed the iPhone Math or iPhone+, as well as a budget-priced smartphone in the form of the long-rumoured iPhone mini.

Fresh iterations of the iPad and iPad mini are also due later in 2013 and we may even see the arrival of an Apple watch, as the gadget giant takes a tentative step into the world of wearable technology.
